UUFTC Sunday Services
We expand our theme of
“UUs Touch the World” to include:
“Nonviolence and Caring Communication”

Sunday, January 10, 10:30 a.m., Douglas Flat Schoolhouse, Calaveras County
Marguerite Johnson will speak about the evolution of the
Martin Luther King celebrations in Sonora.

Sunday, January 10, 10 a.m., Fellowship House, Sonora
“The Art of Storytelling Builds Bridges to Touch the World” B.Z. Smith.
Story Quilter and master story-teller B.Z. Smith will talk about how storytelling
brings us together in a deeper understanding of the world’s cultures. She will also tell some stories
and talk about her new 6-week Story/ Memoir Project on which
she and Deanna Maurer are collaborating, beginning on January 14
at the Tuolumne County Library. After the meeting, we will have coffee, tea, and
maybe refreshments, and enjoy discussion until lunchtime!

Sunday January 17, 10 a.m., Stage 3, Sonora, Rev. Craig Scott
“Gandhi, King, and Nonviolence”
These two giants of nonviolence came from entirely different backgrounds and religious contexts.
Yet they formed similar theories of nonviolence, each drawing on the theology and philosophy
of his own tradition. What did nonviolence mean to each of them,
and how did they arrive at their respective views?

Sunday, January 24, 10:30 a.m., Douglas Flat Schoolhouse, 1358 Main St., Douglas Flat
Chris Montesano from the Catholic Workers farm near Mountain
Ranch will speak about their work to serve the handicapped and disabled from
their retreat in the foothills . The Mother Lode Office of Catholic
Charities recently received a Community Innovative Aging in Place grant to
expand their Outreach and Engagement Program. The Office of Catholic
Charities provide a wide range of services to people of all ages, faiths and
ethnic backgrounds.

Sunday, January 24, 10 a.m., Fellowship House, Sonora
Come and listen to, and participate in, a play reading!
We’re still searching for the perfect short play, and we’ll let you know
soon which one we decide on.

Sunday January 31, 10:30 a.m., Groveland Library, Mary Laveroni Park, Groveland
“I was sick and you cared for me:”
Health Care as a Moral Issue. Rev. Craig Scott Speaking
As of this writing, we have no idea whether there will be federal Health Care
legislation by the end of January ’10,
and if so, what it will look like. But, whatever the situation,
we know that the struggle will not be over.
So, for us as a community of faith, what are the ethical ramifications
of the ongoing effort to provide universal access to health care?

Sunday, January 31, 10 a.m., Fellowship House, Sonora
We will view the video of June General Assembly in Salt Lake. In her talk, “We Ask You to Believe,”
Angela Herrera, a ministerial candidate and student at Harvard Divinity School,
describes how she learned that “it’s not true that [UUs] don’t have to believe in anything!”
As we UUs struggle both as individuals and together as a people of faith,
we continue to build our beloved community.
Bring your own ideas of “what you/we believe”
and plan on a lively discussion following this short video!

Parents, Youth, and Children!!
Come to help us sustain our exciting new programs.
Child care for pre-schoolers.
